Late in the afternoon, we took a walk to St. Mark's cathedral for the evening mass.
In front of the Basilica:
St. Mark's Basilica is a magnificent edifice of Byzantine architecture. It is the center of the old city, next to the Piazza San Marco. The ancient Venetian wealth and power is on display by the gold mosaic and statue all over the church. The mosaic reminds its visitor of what the Haggai Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, must have been like before the Ottoman empire took over the city and removed the decorations in the church.
Mass at St. Mark was entirely in Italian, leaving some of us visitors lost during service. Chimdi interrupted by fussing during service, needing to be fed.
Inside the basilica:
At the end of service, we met up with an old friend, Fr. Ejeh, who is teaching at one of the local institutes here in Venice.
