Ojemba in West Africa

Though originally from the continent, we have not really explored the region. So for this year adventure, we decided to dip our toes in the waters of the sub continent and witness the vibrant and different aspects of West Africa. This is probably the most anticipated trip for us in a while. An opportunity to explore our motherland, and expose the children to a different part of the world.

This is not the first time for any of the kids visiting Nigeria; but this was the first time we deliberately wanted to see West Africa as we would other Ojemba destinations.

Our trip this year was scheduled to start from Lagos, Nigeria. We spent some time in the slums of Lagos--the underbelly of this huge city with more than 18 million. Most Nigerians have not been around these slums; and it is easy to understand why when you get close to any of them.

Our trip also took us to Imo State; and to our ancestral village Avutu Obowo.  Though grandpa was not around to welcome us--as he would have done excitingly--we felt his presence; he welcomed us home!

We then went to Dakar, Senegal for a week. The experience of visiting Goree Island will forever remain with us. From Dakar, we will be off to Accra, Ghana for some days. From there, we hope to take a road trip back to Lagos.
